13)Elisha Graves Otis was a descendent of James Otis. It was Elisha that installed a “safety hoist” in a building in 1852 as a means to prevent the sudden fall of the elevator. Five years later, he designed and constructed the first safety elevator in a New York City building. By 1861, following additional improvements to his system, Otis’s sons formed the Otis Elevator Company. (ups and downs)
14)December 12, 1901, Marconi attempted to send the first radio signals across the Atlantic Ocean. He set up a specially designed wireless receiver in Newfoundland, Canada, using a coherer (a glass tube filled with iron filings) to conduct radio waves, and balloons to lift the antenna as high as possible. The signals were sent in Morse code from Poldhu, Cornwall, in England. “The letter S” was what he could hear. The electric waves sent out into space from Poldhu had traversed the Atlantic — the distance, enormous as it seemed then, of 1,700 miles.
15)In 1902, George Fuller invented the first steel skyscraper, the 21-story Flatiron Building in New York City
